What Makes a good life: lessons from the longest study on happiness
What truly makes us happy?
In Robert Waldinger's What Makes a Good Life: Lessons's from the Longest Study on Happiness, he proves that there is so much more to life than fame and fortune. When a group of Millennials were asked what they though the most important goal in life was, over 80% believed that wealth was the ultimate goal. In the same group, another 50% believed it was fame. Kids are always told that success is the best thing in life. As Waldinger said, "Most of what we know about human life, we know from asking people to remember the past. And as we know, hindsight is anything but 20/20."
Over 75 year ago, Harvard created a study called the Harvard Study of Adult Development collected 724 men to participate in finding happiness in one's life. 60 out of 724 men are still alive and are still active participants in the project, most are in their 90's.
So far, research has shown that good relationships keep us happier and healthier for 3 reasons.
1.Social connections help us live longer, help us feel happier, and encourages us to become physically fit.
2.The number of friends you have doesn't matter. What matters is how well you connect with them.
3.A good relationship protects the body as ell as the brain. It helps make us feel more secure and protected.
Basically, no matter how much money or fame you have, as long as you have close and healthy relationships, happiness will come your way.
